Pacman talks to continue

The Cowboys have talked to the Tennessee Titans about trading for cornerback Pacman Jones, but negotiations have hit a snag over compensation. Tennessee is asking for a fourth-round pick this year and a sixth-round pick next year that could become a fifth-rounder based on performance, according to a source.

Tennessee is also threatening to keep him on the roster if their demands are not met.

Manny Arora, Jones' agent, said the Titans are simply testing the market.

“The contract is in place (with Tennessee if he's on the roster),” Arora said Monday. “They are not unintelligent people. They know what they are doing."

Arora believes a deal will be made soon.

“They (Titans) have already made it publicly known that he needs to find another home. Hopefully, it will be Dallas,” Arora said. “At some point there is not going to be a market for him. If the draft comes and goes, his value for them reduces. If there is going to be a deal, I imagine it would come in the next three weeks."

Gregg Williams to the Jags

Gregg Williams is no longer available to become an assitant on the Cowboys' defensive staff.
The former Redskins defensive coordinator and Bills head coach has accepted a position to become the new defensive coordinator/assistant head coach of the Jaguars, which is being reported by a Jacksonsville sports radio station and ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Williams spoke with the Cowboys last week, not long after he was fired by the Redskins and eliminated as a choice to replace Joe Gibbs as that team's next head coach.
But his coming to the Cowboys never made much sense. For one, his first interview was with the Jags, and if he couldn't be a head coach he wanted at least to be the defensive coordinator.
And Williams, though long considered a top defensive coordinator, is a 4-3 guy. The Cowboys, and specifically head coach Wade Wade Phillips, are a 3-4 defense.
That leaves former Texans and Panthers head coach Dom Capers as candidate to join the staff as a linebackers coach. It does, however, appear that Capers will not accept the position that has been offered.
The more likely candidate to be the Cowboys next linebackers coach is Ricky Hunley, who was fired for the same job by the Bengals after the 2007 season. He spent the past five seasons with the Bengals as a linebackers coach. He played for Phillips when he was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos the 1980s.

A record, then again, it isn't

There were past Super Bowl games with higher ratings, topped by the 1982 game between San Francisco and Cincinnati (49.1 rating, 73 share). That indicates that a larger percentage of homes with televisions were watching the game. But since the American population has increased, along with the number of people with TVs, the actual number of people watching this year was higher.

The Giants-Patriots game's actual rating (43.3 rating, 65 share) was the highest for any Super Bowl since 1997. That means 43 percent of the nation's TV sets were tuned in to the game, and 65 percent of the TV sets that were turned on were watching football.

The "M*A*S*H" farewell episode had a rating of 60.2

Cowboys-Steelers '96 record toppled

The New York Giants' thrilling win over the New England Patriots was the most-watched Super Bowl ever, with 97.5 million viewers, Nielsen Media Research said Monday.

The game eclipsed the previous Super Bowl record of 94.08 million, set when Dallas defeated Pittsburgh in 1996. More people watched Sunday's game than all but one American television broadcast ever, the "M-A-S-H" finale in 1983, which was seen by 106 million viewers.

Jason Taylor NFL Man of the Year

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, announced just before the Super Bowl kickoff. Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, Chiefs offensive lineman and former North Texas player Brian Waters and Steelers receiver Hines Ward were the other finalists.

It was another postseason loss for the Cowboys.

Witten cheated out of winner's share?

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten learned something from Broncos safety John Lynch in a Fox pregame segment.

In a discussion of the Patriots' Spygate scandal, Lynch said at last year's Pro Bowl that Patriots coach Bill Belichick had assistant coaches watch the NFC practice. "We were getting the plays. [I asked] how do you know that?"

Witten was asked if he knew that was going on. "No," he said to much laughter, "it cost me 40 grand."

Witten is one of the finalists for the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The winner will be announced right before Super Bowl kickoff, Fox says.

Terry Glenn: "Don't rule me out!"

Wide receiver Terry Glenn worked practiced with the Cowboys Wednesday for the first time since having two surgeries on his right knee in September.

Glenn said, "It went OK. I'm just going forward."

Wade Phillips has ruled Terry Glenn out of Sunday's game against Philadelphia. However, Glenn hinted at a possible surprise return Sunday.

"Don't rule me out! Don't rule me out!"

Coverage Roy Williams can handle

He may not be the best in coverage on the field, but working the coverage on the Red Carpet is no problem for Cowboys safety Roy Williams.

Williams masterfully guided a group of red carpet novices (and Cowboys teammates) through the photo ops for Monday night's charity birthday party for Terrell Owens. Williams, along with cornerback Anthony Henry, wide receiver Isaiah Stanback, among others, posed for photos with Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child, and actresses Jill Marie Jones and Tasha Smith before heading inside to celebrate T.O.'s birthday.

Postgame quotables, Wade Phillps version

Opening statement:
You know, it's great to be 11-1. We broke the record of the 2007 team that was 10-1. Those guys, I liked. I thought they were a good group.

What were your thoughts on when Green Bay came within three points:
Well, we had some penalties and we had some things that hurt us, but we overcame like we have all year. We overcame some of those things. Green Bay is a good team, they are going to keep fighting back and they did. We knew it wasn't going to be easy and it wasn't. It was a victory for us.

What are your thoughts on the offense continuing to outscore the opponent:
Well, I said it earlier - I think we have a great offense. I don't think we have a good offense, I think we have a great offense because we can score a lot of points. We can comeback from first and 20. We can move the ball on some good defenses. Green Bay's defense is awfully good and we played really well - scored a lot of points against them.

What are your thoughts on Tony Romo's performance:
I don't know if he's the next American idol, but he played really well and answered the bell. I think a lot of people here had seen him play when people said he might have concentration on this, or his contract, or he might have let down because his hero is playing and all of those things, and he hadn't done it a bit. I just can't say enough about our quarterback.

What do you think about the production of Miles Austin?
Miles had a great game. He'd been doing well on kickoff returns. I thought our blocking obviously was really good, it gave us field position. He had a good game last week. I think he gained some confidence, I'm talking about offensively. You know, he beat his guy twice and they had to interfere with him to stop him from scoring two touchdowns, so he's got a lot of speed. He's got a lot of confidence now on offense and I think some on special teams.

How much better do you think your team can get?
I think we can get better. There are always things you need to work on; there are always things you can get better. You know, we missed some tackles on defense certainly that we don't normally miss. We didn't make it on fourth and one. There's obviously things we can work on that we can get better.
