One of the real challenges of covering a professional football team can be coming up with questions to ask in the offseason, especially of people who have answered every question from What is your favorite color? to How much money does it cost to make it rain?
Since he's come to the Cowboys, Adam Jones has answered just about every question we the media can think of, but just in case we had to throw one more out on Wednesday afternoon at an event held at Sam's Furniture in Fort Worth.
Media: Are you ready for training camp?
Adam Jones: Come on, we've got eight more days (before camp starts). What kind of question is that?
Media: A hard-hitting question. Are you ready?

I felt compelled to ask him if HBO was giving him anything extra on the side for such promotional work which the cable giant is not. He did, however, say they should.

Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones' attempt at a massive personality change isn't going smashingly just yet.
Why? He can't seem to shake the name Pacman.
Just arrived back from a very nice "moment" when Jones and Mavs forward Brandon Bass came to Sam's Furniture in Fort Worth where they were helping a family in need obtain some free furniture for their home.
Bass and Jones were talking to reporters and describing how they became involved with this situation.
"Myself and Linda Luna (a pr rep) got with Pacman. I mean, Adam Jones," Bass said.
"You can call me Pac," Jones said.
So it appears there are now two people Jones is cool with calling him Pacman: His mother, and Brandon Bass.

The Cowboys have signed safety Ken Hamlin to a six-year contract worth $39 million, sources said.
The deal includes a $9 million signing bonus.
Hamlin, who had been the team’s designated “franchise player” back in February, had until this afternoon to agree to an extension or sign the team’s one-year offer.
With this signing, it continues an offseason that has seen the Cowboys spend nearly $70 million in guaranteed money.

The Cowboys are very close to signing safety Ken Hamlin to a multi-year contract, according to a source. A deal could be finalized as soon as later today or Tuesday.
The team designated Hamlin as their franchise player back in February and have been working towards a long-term deal since then.
Hamlin finished the 2007 season with 47 total tackles, five interceptions and 15 passes defensed.

The Dallas Cowboys weren't interested in Atlanta Falcons aging receiver Joe Horn and apparently they are not alone. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said he has not had any contact with the Cowboys.

Ok, the on-going issue with Cowboys veteran receiver Terry Glenn hangs over this team until training camp begins July 25. The questions remain. ...Will TG sign the $500,000 waiver and bank that his knee will hold up?
Or will the Cowboys cut Glenn even if he signs and opt to bank on what they have -- Patrick Crayton as the No. 2 with Sam Hurd, Miles Austin and Isaiah Stanback as the WR depth along with help from TE Jason Witten and RB Felix Jones? An injury to Terrell Owens has the Cowboys looking at Crayton and Hurd as their starters.
Or will they still try to trade for another WR? That's if they can find a willing team.

Forget the media speculation about the Cowboys' showing interest in Falcons disgruntled wide receiver Joe Horn.
It was never a consideration at the team's Valley Ranch headquarters. Horn's agent called to see if there was interest. The Cowboys took 30 seconds to say, hell no. They believe Horn is washed up as a player.
They also believe Horn would be a bad fit in the lockerroom. So the Cowboys never had any interest in Horn.
That's why we at the Star-Telegram never reported it because there was never anything to it.
It was a non story. It takes two sides to show interest, not one.

The Cowboys have released five players to cut the roster down to 79 with one day left in the three-day-minicamp.
The unlucky five are -- WR Joe West, OT Brandon Hale, LB Alain Karatepeyan and CBs Justin Phinisee and Jerron Wishom.

Cowboys guard Leonard Davis was forced to leave the afternoon practice after about 40 minutes due to cramps. He left to receive an IV in the training room and did not return. Nose tackle Tank Johnson left the practice early because of cramping to also receive an IV. Johnson returned to the field.
''Hot weather, you know,'' Wade Phillips said after practice.

Count wide receiver Patrick Crayton as one of the Cowboys who would prefer to be staying in San Antonio for training camp.
While he likes the weather of Oxnard, Calif. he would rather be indoors at the Alamodome. But he would also rather be closer to home. He gets his wish next year when the team returns to San Antonio.

Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton talked with veteran Terry Glenn on Father's Day. They didn't talk about Glenn's situation with the team, but Crayton is not surprised by what has developed.
Glenn said Tuesday he will not sign the $500,000 injury waiver and wants to be released. Crayton believes Glenn has too much pride and put too much into his rehabilitation to sign for less than his contract. Glenn, who turns 34 next month, possibly decided not to agree because he has something else in the works. Not likely for $1.74 million, but could he have something lined up with the Dolphins and his close ex-coach Bill Parcells?

Here are some observations from the morning practice on Day 2 of the three-day mini-camp at Valley Ranch....
* CB Pacman Jones was running some with the first-team defense during team drills. He was on the field opposite Pro Bowl CB Terence Newman.
* WR Miles Austin continues to show off good hands, ones that haven't always been so reliable.
* Not good: LB Bradie James put a clothsline hit on wide receiver Patrick Crayton knocking him to the ground near the sidelines during team drills.
* Showing signs: LB Bobby Carpenter continues to make plays on the field. He came up with an impressive break up in the middle of the field on a pass intended for TE Martellus Bennett.
* Rookie WR Joe West made a nice catch beating Pacman Jones on a pass from Richard Bartel.
* Kick returners: Pacman Jones, Miles Austin, Danny Amendola, Felix Jones.
* Bad hands: Rookie RB Tashard Choice had a rough morning on special teams. As part of the hands team on kickoff return he dropped two kicks that went right through his hands. He jumped for one and the other squirted through his hands.
* Good hands: CB Jerron Wishom had an interception for a would-be touchdown on a tipped pass off the hands of Martellus Bennett.
* Bradie the coverage man: Bradie James has been all over the field with tight coverage on the tight ends. Today, he was all over Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett.
* Drop alert: RBs Felix Jones and Alonzo Coleman on screens.
* Practice visitors: Southlake Carroll Dragons head coach Hal Wasson got a chance to visit the morning practice and check out the facility. Some of his assistants will attend during the afternoon. ... Wasson returned for the afternoon workout along with a few University of North Texas assistants.
* Air it out: WR Patrick Crayton, a former college and high school quarterback at DeSoto, has a big arm and showed it off on a long half-back pass to Sam Hurd. Crayton overthrew Hurd who got behind the secondary.
* Best catch of mini-camp: WR Isaiah Stanback made a wow play during the afternoon snatching an impressive leaping catch high in the air during team drills. Stanback jumped up over LB Justin Rogers to make the grab.
* Heavily coached: SS Roy Williams, who is playing even less in coverage this season, is getting plenty of coaching during the minicamp. He is reguarly seen on the sidelines getting instruction from defensive coordinator Brian Stewart or secondary coaches Dave Campo and Brett Maxie.

As expected, Terrell Owens, Ken Hamlin and Terry Glenn were not at the Cowboys practice Wednesday morning.
No one from the group is expected to appear this week.

Cowboys oft-targeted strong safety Roy Williams is ready to begin the season motivated to answer his critics. Even coach Wade Phillips says he has seen a newly-motivated Williams during the offseason. Williams is sensitive to the Roy bashers and calls this season a put-up or shut-up year.
Phillips acknowledged the Pro Bowler's change during his press conference on Tuesday.
''I think it (attitude) was fine (last year) but I think he's more motivated,'' Phillips said. ''That's good. He seems more motivated. Whatever it is that motivates a player, I'm for. Now it doesn't motivate me to criticize me all the time.''

It was a wild first day of the Cowboys three-day mini-camp at Valley Ranch....Here's the wrap up.
* WR Terry Glenn wants to be released and is not willing to sign a $500,000 injury settlement. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he had agreed to the waiver. But he has apparently changed his mind.
* WR Terrell Owens missed the practices and will not attend the mini-camp because of a death in the family, according to two sources.
* Wild weather rolled through the Irving area and cut short the morning practice under ominous clouds.
Here are some of the practice observations from the afternoon workout...
* First, the biggest thing noticed...Cowboys sponsers attended practice and we saw a first -- a mini-bar had been set up in the corner of the indoor facility for all to enjoy. There were two margarita machines. If only Bill Parcells could have seen this.
* Rookie CB Orlando Scandrick intercepted quarterback Tony Romo with his big moment since he arrived.
* Bye-bye: NT Jay Ratliff blew past center Andre Gurode in one-on-one line drills. Ratliff may be even quicker than last year off the line.
* We saw it: DE Marcus Spears whipped his way past big Leonard Davis to get into the backfield in the one-on-one line drills.
* We saw it II: LB Bradie James with blanket pass coverage on rookie RB Felix Jones. Jones dropped a little swing pass that was thrown behind him and James was all over the play.
* Felix Jones can hit he to the outside with lightning quickness.
* CB Terence Newman never misses a beat. He intercepted Brad Johnson on a pass intended for Isaiah Stanback.
* WR Sam Hurd was making plays all day -- morning and afternoon. Last week Miles Austin, this week Sam Hurd. That's why Wade Phillips feels OK about his WR depth.
* How about that? Rookie TE Martellus Bennett made a impressive diving catch from Brad Johnson in the end zone to beat SS Roy Williams during the two-minute drill. We know what you are thinking.
* WR Patrick Crayton beat tight coverage from CB Orlando Scandrick for a TD during the two-minute drill. Scandrick popped the ball loose just barely after Crayton reached the front corner of the end zone. Crayton was confident he made the play saying, ''That's a touchdown, don't worry about that.''

Terrell Owens, Ken Hamlin and Terry Glenn missed Tuesday morning's workouts on the first day of a three-day minicamp at Valley Ranch.
Owens is "tending to personal business" according to Cowboys public relations director Rich Dalrymple. Owen's status for the remainder of minicamp is unknown.
Glenn is not expected to attend any minicamp workouts. He didn't take a physical on Monday and remains at an impasse the Cowboys over an injury settlement.
Hamlin, the team's designated franchise player, is still seeking a long-term contract.
The action cranks back up at Valley Ranch this week. The Cowboys mandatory three-day mini-camp begins Tuesday at Valley Ranch. The Cowboys will have a morning and afternoon practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and one practice on Thursday. The first workout begins at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Two players that are not expected to be on the practice fields are FS Ken Hamlin (top) and WR Terry Glenn. Both were absent from all of the voluntary OTA practices. Hamlin is still trying to get a long-term deal done. He would not be fined by the club for missing the mini-camp since he is not under contract.
Glenn must sign a $500,000 injury settlement before hitting the practice field. He has been working hard to rehab the knee, which required two surgeries last season, since the playoff loss to the Giants. Glenn has indicated he is ready to return but the Cowboys want him to sign the agreement to protect themselves financially if he reinjures the troublesome knee. Glenn is set to earn a $1.74 million salary this season.

The Cowboys rookies took a little break on Friday with a one-day field trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The tour was an idea hatched by Hall of Famer and former Cowboy receiver Michael Irvin, who was also in Canton to talk with the rookies.
Irvin pitched the idea to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about introducing young players to the history of the game and its players to have a better appreciation for the league. The Eagles rookies also visited on Friday.

New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan announced his retirement this week after playing for 15 years. Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo surely eels a lot better. So does quarterback Tony Romo. He will no longer have to worry about Strahan chasing him in the pocket.
''I was very happy when he retired,'' Romo said. ''He a great player and he really made that defense go in some ways. They've got a lot of talent there, but he's the anchor of that, not only the D-line, but that defensive unit.''
Romo also thinks there is a strong chance Strahan could soon be coming out of a very short retirement.
''Oh yeah, I think there's a strong chance.''

Cowboys receiver Miles Austin is coming off an impressive week of practice during the final OTAs. His highlight on Wednesday came when he beat Pacman Jones with a leaping catch in the end zone. He showed nice hands throughout practice and quarterback Tony Romo was also impressed with his week.
Austin, who has good speed but his hands have been questionable, is grabbing some attention this offseason. Austin was seperating from defenders, including Jones, on his releases.
''I think Miles Austin has tremendous speed,'' Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman said. ''He's starting to come around and he's made great strides from last year, from last camp. I really like what I'm seeing out of him right now. I expect him to get better.''
Austin, who is entering his third year, has five career catches for 76 yards and was the fourth receiver last year and became the primary kick returner. He will be forced to show his improvement with draft-pick Isaiah Stanback making progress and the rookie minicamp standout and free agent Danny Amendola hunting for a roster spot.

During a chat recently with Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman, he was retelling his time with cornerback/return man Pacman Jones while both were in Tennessee. He talked about his tremendous big-play impact when he had the ball in his hands and how he ignited the Titans -- including on offense.
Pacman had two receptions in Tennessee and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has also thrown out the possibility of him playing some receiver in Dallas. Sherman said many of the things they practiced with Pacman on offense were never used in Tennesse.
"When he gets his hands on the ball he is a guy that can make people miss,'' Sherman said. ''People will see once he returns a punt or a kickoff. He's one of the most explosive guys I've ever been around.''
Since this offense is full of firepower, the chances of him catching a pass may be remote. But he could, however, add yet another interesting dimension to Jason Garrett's playbook. His use on reverses is another possibility.
Sherman sounds like he would like to see it. It would be an even stronger possibility if Terry Glenn goes down again. Pacman had two catches for 31 yards in 2006...both for first downs. He also has two carries for eight yards. Sherman may need to do some convincing to Wade Phillips to get him some time on offense.
''It depends on what coach Phillips decides,'' Sherman said.

Here are some tidbits for you Cowboys fans from Wednesday's OTA practice at Valley Ranch. This is the last week of the OTAs before next week's minicamp....
* Star of the day: WR Miles Austin. The man some consider to have shaky hands at times during his young career made some nice catches today. His highlight came when he toasted former OTA star CB Pacman Jones in the end zone on a long pass from Tony Romo. Austin's leaping catch during team drills was impressive.
* Had a bad day: CB Pacman Jones. Beat by Austin for a touchdown, dropped a punt and Austin was separating on him on his routes. Jones got a lot of reps on Wednesday but did not stand out.
* Bobby Carpenter sighting. The much-maligned linebacker had a good practice highlighted by a diving pass breakup on a short pass to rookie RB Tashard Choice.
* Speaking of Choice...he has a nice little burst to the outside.
* No one on this team looks smoother catching punts than CB Terence Newman. But it's just too risky to use him there full time.
* Wade Phillips was at it again. He slapped hands with Newman and starting shaking his hand like it hurt. Maybe it did. But yes, it's the same thing he did with Tony Romo on the sideline during a game and the TV camera caught it.
* WR Terrell Owens gave the young safety Courtney Brown a lesson, burning him on a long TD pass during 7-on-7 drills.
* RB Keon Lattimore, the younger brother of Ravens LB Ray Lewis, made a nice catch against LB Kevin Burnett in the flat during 7-on-7 drills.
* Odd moment of the day: RB Marion Barber slapped QB Tony Romo on the rear during drills so loud you could hear it from the sidelines.
* One-hand Witten: TE Jason Witten made a nice one-handed catch toward the end of practice.
* Marion Barber may have a hard time with the new Marion Barber Rule, which will not allow him to put his hand in an opponent's face mask. After catching a screen pass, he put his hand up in the face of CB Evan Oglesby.
* NT Tank Johnson is playing like the beast that he calls himself right now. He had PBU on a pass that hit him in the chest during the two-minute drill.
* Where's Roy Williams? Not on the field during the two-minute drill. CB Anthony Henry now covers the TEs in his place on the dime package.
* Big day for the Frog: TCU-ex CB Quincy Butler intercepted Brad Johnson who underthrew (shocking, right?) receiver Mike Jefferson on a long pass.
* Good and bad: TE Martellus Bennett had a nice catch against Anthony Henry from Richard Bartel but also had a drop.
* Bad sign: FB Deon Anderson, who has put on some serious pounds in the offseason, had a big box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts in his hands at his locker after practice. Some guys prefer energy drinks, Deon prefers glaze.

Today was the final day of media access in the final week of the OTAs...Next week the Cowboys will have a minicamp.
Free safety Ken Hamlin and wide receiver Terry Glenn remain out of the OTAs. Hamlin still doesn't have a long-term deal done and Glenn has to sign an injury settlement before he can return to the field. More from today's practice coming...

Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens is under NFL scrutiny after missing calls to set up a drug test. Owens has since released a statement through his publicist and says he has cleared up the problem with the league. Owens has never failed a drug test in his career. Owens met with the league in New York the same day he signed his new contract and had a press conference at Texas Stadium. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there are no issues with Owens.

Tennessee Titans middle linebacker Ryan Fowler, who played for the Cowboys in 2004-06, has been notified by the league that he faces a suspension for violation of the NFL's policy for performance-enhancing drugs. Fowler left the Cowboys and signed a four-year, $11.5 million contract with the Titans in 2007 as a restricted free agent. The Cowboys did not match the offer sheet.
Fowler was a backup with the Cowboys and a standout on the special teams.

That's a possibility for the future and he is very open to the move. Henry sees a lot of talent now around him at cornerback with Pacman Jones and first-round pick Mike Jenkins. Henry thinks moving to safety will help prolong his career as he enters his eighth year.
Henry is working some at a safety position in the Cowboys dime package. The move would replace Roy Williams and allow Henry to match up with tight ends. It could also be a formation with four cornerbacks on the field in Henry, Terence Newman, Pacman Jones and Mike Jenkins. Also, Henry played safety the first three years of his career and could be the future free safety with Ken Hamlin moving to strong safety after next year if Williams is no longer with team.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo dinged his left (non-throwing) hand during team drills at Wednesday's OTA practice. He was examined by the team's head athletic trainer Jim Maurer and had his left middle finger taped. Romo finished the rest of practice and did not appear bothered by the injury.

Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones gave new buddy Tank Johnson a call when he was reinstated on Monday. Johnson has helped Pacman since he joined the team, guiding him with his transition and trying to steer him down the right path, since he has been there himself.
''He said I will be out there tomorrow and I told him I have been looking forward to it for a long time,'' Johnson said. ''We're excited for him and especially me, because I have been down that path.''
Tank on the Cowboys watching Pacman at practice: ''Anytime you have a playmaker like that of
his caliber you've got to watch him, because if you blink your eye he's going to be going the other way. Just like yesterday when he took a pick to the house. They said, 'There's goes that man' -- because he's dang good at what he does.''
Tank on if Pacman can stay out of trouble: ''I'm sure he's going to do his very best. I am pretty confident he will do his best. He knows what's at stake and more importantly he knows what he has to be a part of. The good side of it is he has a chance to be a part of something special and he takes that very seriously.''

Here are a few observations from Wednesday's OTA practice at Valley Ranch....
* Indy Racing League star Helio Castroneves was a guest at Valley Ranch. He played catch with Tony Romo and then caught a few passes while covered by CB Terence Newman, who is a huge racing fan. After Castroneves beat him on a 25-yard go route, Newman buckled down with some press coverage on the next pass. Watch a video of Castroneves' visit here.
* CB Pacman Jones, in just his second practice after being out more than a year, had another interception. That's two in his first two practices and both against third-string quarterback Richard Bartel. Conspiracy theory: They were scripted. Remember, the first day one came on the last play of practice.
* Also, Pacman looked tiny out there. He was never big to begin with but he appears to have lost weight in his upper body. He is listed at 5-10, 185 pounds.
* Safety Roy Williams accidentally plowed over RB Felix Jones on a run knocking him to the ground during team drills. Maybe that was a good sign, Cowboys fans.
* Newman said he ain't going to babysit Pacaman but he did offer him a little 1-on-1 instruction today during defensive back drills.
* Deion Sanders, the mentor to the troubled Dallas stars, was at practice and wearing a gray fedora. Sanders talked after practice about his new project, Pacman Jones.
* Jerry Jones' first stop on the practice field when he arrived was to watch the defensive backs and Pacman.
* WR Isaiah Stanback, whom the coaches have high hopes for, made an impressive leaping catch during practice.
* Not there: FS Ken Hamlin and WR Terry Glenn.
* Back at practice: OLB Greg Ellis.
* Locker room observation: Pacman is one locker (which says Adam Jones, by the way) away from new buddy Tank Johnson. Sandwiched in between is rookie WR Danny Amendola. No word if they have invited Danny to hang out.
* Heard outside the locker room: Pacman touting his bowling ability to some Cowboys officials. Pacman does have some serious game on the lanes.
* One of Pacman's new teammate buddies is the very likable Deon Anderson, the second-year fullback.

Linebacker Greg Ellis returned to practice Wednesday.
Ellis was a no-show last week over the diappointment/distrust over how it seems the Cowboys are planning to use him as a pass rush specialist.

Indy Racing Series star and two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves will be a guest at Valley Ranch on Wednesday visiting with the Cowboys after their OTA practice session. Castroneves, also a champion from Dancing With the Stars, expects to run some routes and catch a few passes from Tony Romo. Castroneves is in town for Saturday night's IRL race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Castroneves and Romo should hit it off. Castroneves is a big cheese when it comes to having fun. He also knows Terrell Owens after buddying up with him at a pro tennis tournament in Florida earlier this year. Maybe Helio will climb the fence (his trademark in IRL after wins) when he enters the practice field area.

Tight end Jason Witten joined Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, Fort Worth Public Health Director Dan Reimer and the Ad Council’s North Texas Leadership Committee in unveiling a localized multimedia public service advertising (PSA) campaign in an effort to combat childhood obesity in North Texas.
In partnership with the NFL and Cowboys Play 60 initiative, this localized effort is part of the Ad Council’s national ongoing Childhood Obesity Prevention campaign with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Statistics reveal that more than 12 ½ million kids nationally are overweight, which equates to 17 percent of children (ages 6-18).
"You have to realize that this is a huge problem in our country," Witten said. "As an athlete, it’s good to bring out the awareness like this."
Witten is in a commercial with San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush promoting Play 60, which encourages children to play 60 minutes a day to combat obesity.
Following the news conference, he took active role in the campaign by playing football, soccer, jump rope and hula hoop with about a dozen kids from the Arlington Boys and Girls Club.

Cowboys vice-president Stephen Jones said they expect wide receiver Terry Glenn to sign a $500,000 injury waiver for his surgically-repaired right knee.
Glenn, who has no agent and is representing himself for now, is due $1.74 million this season.
By signing an injury waiver, if he injures his right knee and goes on injured reserve, the $1.74 million would be nullified and he would be paid $500,000.

A few years ago Drew Rosenhaus said TO and the Cowboys were a match made in heaven. He credits the Cowboys with getting this deal done because of a commitment to winning.
''I wish I had more players on the Cowboys,'' Rosenhaus said. ''The Cowboys are an organization that is determined to win and part of winning is getting players signed.''

The Terrell Owens press conference has started, but before it got going a huge bowl of popcorn was placed at the table in front of Owens and Jerry Jones.
In photo sure to be seen everywhere, Jones and TO took a few bites before the press conference started.
"It's fresh,'' Owens said of the popcorn.
Owens' agent Drew Rosenhaus is also here at the Stadium Club at Texas Stadium. Owens has signed a three-year extension and will be in Dallas through the 2011 season.
"I am a Cowboy for life and I am happy,'' Owens said.
Jerry just said TO never pushed Rosenhaus to get an extension done. Jerry said the Cowboys initiated the extension talks.

The Cowboys have called a 4 p.m. press conference to announce the signing of receiver Terrell Owens to his contract extension. Dallas is going big time with this one....the press conference will be held at the Stadium Club at Texas Stadium. Hoping TO brings his agent Drew ''Next question'' Rosenhaus. He always has a monumental quote on these occassions.

Ex-Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter is moving his way up it appears. He has been named starter this week for the Kansas City Brigade in the Arena Football League. Too bad Dallas fans. You won't get to see him face the Dallas Desperados. They are not on KC's schedule and the Brigade sit at 2-9 out of the playoff hunt.
Carter joined the team last month and previously played for Bossier City-Shreveport in af2 (the lower arena league).
