Cheerleading Hall of Fame? Bring it on!

North Texas is in the running for a proposed Cheerleading Hall of Fame. (Insert The Wave here). The effort is being headed up by Cindy Villlarreal-Hughes, a former Cowboys cheerleader. You can hear her talk about her plans for a shrine to team spirit on NPR's Morning Edition. (Note the tone of condescension in anchor Renee Montaine's voice. She must've been a drama nerd.)

Cindy points out that several presidents were cheerleaders, like Ike and Ronny. When Montaine mentions W's time with the megaphone, Villarreal-Hughes quickly changes the subject. (Knew I liked her.)

In today's Associated Press story, the writer points out several famous and infamous cheerleaders who have called Texas home. Rick Perry cheered (can't picture that), so did Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Of course, there was Wanda Holloway, who hired a hit man to off the mother of her daughter's cheerleading rival. And cheerleaders in Southlake have had some trouble recently, too.

My personal favorite former cheerleader was Sela Ward, who cheered for Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide.  Did I mention I bowled with Sela?

I've been a fan of cheerleaders ever since I dated one for a few weeks in high school. I was a senior, she was a freshman. Let's just say no charges were filed.

Two final thoughts. Make sure an entire wing in the cheerleaders' hall of fame is devoted to Bring it On, the movie starring Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku (though there should be no mention of the ill-fated sequel).
