Mexican drug cartels turn to bank robberies for cash
Drug cartels whose trade has been hurt by the ongoing war for supremacy in northern Mexico have turned to bank robbery, extortion and kidnapping to make up for revenues lost in their conflict, reporter Daniel Borunda writes for the El Paso Times.
He notes that in the U.S., many bank robbers usually present a note demanding money while in Mexico the bank robbers are usually heavily armed and shootouts with police haven't been uncommon.
The cartels have been engaged in a protracted battle for control in Juarez, Mexico, where the murder toll has now surpassed 1,040, Borunda writes.
