Deadbeat rider fatally stabs driver in front of packed bus
Passengers on a Brooklyn transit bus experienced the horror of watching the bus driver murdered in front of them on Monday.
Driver Edwin Thomas was slain by a deadbeat passenger who didn't pay when he got on the bus and then repeatedly stabbed Thomas when the driver wouldn't give him a free transfer, the New York Post reports. The attacker then fled the bus and eluded a passenger who tried in vain to chase him.
Thomas was the first city bus driver slain while on duty since driver Harvey Shild was killed in 1981, also for refusing to give a rider a free transfer.
Police say a suspect was arrested Tuesday morning in Thomas' slaying.
