When a car passed his niece's birthday party last April in southeast Fort Worth, Jerry Stevenson wasn't alarmed when he noticed a rifle with a laser sight in the car.
"I see people with guns all the time," Stevenson said Wednesday while testifying in a capital murder trial. "I hadn’t done anything so I was not scared.
"It was not my business."
But then there was gunfire.
About 15 children and five adults eating cake and ice cream on the porch scrambled to get inside.
Stevenson began calling for his 5-year-old daughter Queshawn (right). When she didn’t answer, he went to the door.
"I seen my baby lying on the ground — in the dirt on the porch where she had been sitting," Stevenson said.
Erick Davila, 21, (left) is accused of killing the child and her grandmother, Annette Stevenson, in the shooting.
Staff Writer Martha Deller is covering the trail. Read the rest of her report here.
