Police: drunk New York man drove motorcycle more than 130 mph

A 20-year-old New York man is facing drunken driving charges after police say he reached speeds of more than 130 miles per hour while trying to evade police in western New York.

The Associated Press reports that Greg Smith was driving on Route 63 in Oakfield Thursday morning when a Genessee County Sheriff's deputy tried to stop him.

Police said Smith didn't stop until he sped through Oakfield, Batavia and then back into Oakfield where he crashed into another vehicle at an intersection.

But even then, Smith didn't stop. Smith ran away from the scene on foot and was found in a cornfield where he was finally arrested.

Smith faces charges of DWI, reckless driving, speeding and other traffic violations.

Former Texas Rangers player Carl Everett arrested in Florida

Former Major League Baseball player Carl Everett has been arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with a witness.

The Associated Press reports that Everett, who played as an outfield in the MLB for 14 years with teams like the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox, was arrested Monday night at his suburban home in his hometown of Tampa.

Information about his arrest was not immediately available and Everett's attorney didn't respond to calls for comment.

Everett is being held without bond in the Hillsborough County Jail.

Divers looking for bodies after New Mexico small plane crash find cocaine instead

Authorities searching through the wreckage of a small plane crash at a New Mexico lake didn't find any survivors or bodies but were able to make a discovery of a different kind.

The Associated Press reports that New Mexico State Police divers searching Heron Lake in Chama, New Mexico after failing to find the aircraft Sunday found several packages of cocaine floating in the water.

The small plane reportedly crashed into the lake Sunday morning and since the search began, officers have found several packages of the drug weighing in about a kilogram, or just a little more than 2 pounds.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash.

Convicted sex offender arrested at Montana Easter egg hunt after spotted by victim

An Easter egg hunt in Montana turned into a painful reminder for the victim of a sexual assault almost twenty years ago when she spotted the man behind the attack.

The Associated Press reports that 67-year-old William Harvey Suthers was arrested Saturday afternoon at the event in East Missoula after he was spotted by a female victim who was 10 at the time she told police that Suthers assaulted her while babysitting her and her brother in 1992.

Suthers was convicted on two counts of sexual assault and given a suspended sentence in 1998, forbidding him from having any contact with anyone under the age of 18 except for his sons.

Police: 12-year-old Pennsylvania boy traded drugs for candy

A 12-year-old boy caught dealing drugs outside a Pennsylvania school this week must have had a sweet tooth.

TV news station WPXI reports that the New Castle sixth-grader was turned in to school administrators at the George Washington Intermediate School after classmates saw him trading marijuana with adults for candy.

The boy admitted to investigators that on several occasions he stole marijuana from his stepfather and used it to trade for candy, which I guess is better than if it was the other way around (but not by much).  

Police searched the stepfather's home, where they discovered six bags of marijuana in a freezer.

The boy has been suspended from school and is expected to be tried as a juvenile. His stepfather was not so lucky and faces felony drug charges.

Pennsylvania teen accused of machete attack asks to be tried as an adult

A Pennsylvania teen has requested that he should be tried as an adult rather than a juvenile after he allegedly used a machete in an attack on another student.

The Associated Press reports that 17-year-old Luis Manuel Roman allegedly slashed a classmate in a gang-related attack in November at an Allentown school. The injured teen needed 30 stitches.

Roman said he made the request because juvenile offenders are "disrespectful" and he could have visitors in prison that are normally not allowed if he was in a juvenile detention facility.

The judge granted Roman's request but warned that if he's convicted as an adult, the two charges he faces carry a maximum sentence of 20 years prison sentence.

Arizona jury acquits doctor in Phoenix woman's suicide

A doctor was acquitted of manslaughter charges in the suicide of a Phoenix woman who authorities say had assistance in her death.

The Associated Press reports that Dr. Lawrence Egbert was one of four people charged by Arizona authorities in Jana Van Voorhis' death, who prosecutors said was not terminally ill but suffered from mental health issues and depression.

The four are involved with the Georgia-based right-to-die organization called the Final Exit Network. Jurors could not reach a verdict for a co-defendent named Frank Langsner but the other two defendents - Wye Hale-Rowe and Roberta Massey - pleaded guilty to a charge of facilitation to commit manslaughter.

Van Voorhis was found dead in her Phoenix home in April 2007 and an investigation into her death revealed her involvement with the organization. Police believe that Van Voorhis died afater a plastic hood was placed over her head was hooked up to helium tanks.

An initial autopsy appeared to show she had died from natural causes but another autopsy showed her death was a result of helium asphyxiation.

Egbert and Massey were accused of processing applications to the organization while Langsner and Hale Rowe were accused of showing Van Voorhis how to use the hood and tank.

Egbert has also been in indicted in the state of Georgia on charges that he helped a man with cancer kill himself.

Suspected Las Vegas casino robber pleads not guilty

In December, someone tried to hit the jackpot the easy way at the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas.

29-year-old Anthony Carleo is suspected of being the helmet-wearing robber who walked into the casino on the Vegas strip and pocketed $1.5 million worth of chips by shoving handfuls into a pouch and fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Now the Associated Press reports that Carleo has pleaded not guilty to seven felony charges ranging from armed robbery and assault to burglary and weapon charges.

Carleo is the son of a Las Vegas judge and the judge overseeing his case disclosed that she has a brother who works as a craps dealer at the Bellagio.

The prosecutor and Carleo's defense attorney didn't object to the judge handling the case.

What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Carleo faces decades in prison if he's convicted in the trial set for January 2012.

Six youths arrested after Florida teen lured to death by ex-girlfriend

Six teens and adults have been charged in the murder of a 15-year-old Florida boy who police said was lured to his death by an ex-girlfriend who promised to rekindle their romance.

The Associated Press reports that Seath Tyler Jackson received a text message Sunday afternoon from his 15-year-old ex telling him that they should meet at a central Florida house and when he did, police said that he was fatally beaten and shot several times.

Jackson's body was then stuffed in a sleeping bag and burned with the remains put in paint buckets and dumped at an isolated lime rock pit. The house was then doused with bleach to destroy blood evidence.

Investigators said in the arrest warrant affidavit that five of the six suspects told police they were involved in the murder plot. The suspects range in age from 15 to 37 years old.

According to several suspects, the plot was hatched by 20-year-old Michael Bargo, who was also the man behind the trigger in Jackson's shooting.

Witness accounts and police said that Bargo was dating Jackson's ex-girlfriend and had even got into a fight with him several weeks before his murder.

One of the six suspects arrested, a 16-year-old boy, told them that the five suspects were at the house Sunday when Bargo started to talk about how much he hated the victim and the conversation gradually turned into the plot to lure him to the house so that he could kill him.

According to police, the murder plot didn't go quite as planned. Jackson's ex-girlfriend and other teenage girl met with Jackson to try to get him to go to the house but there was a disagreement and he didn't return to the house with them.

One of the suspects told investigators that Bargo was angry and told the two to get Jackson to the house, causing the ex-girlfriend to send the text message that would ultimately convince Jackson to go the house that night.

Of the six people arrested, five have been charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bond.

The stepfather of one of the minors. 37-year-old James Young Havens III, was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and is currently held on $10,000 bond.

California prostitute arrested in sting operation while her kids stayed in the car

In what will probably amount one to the worst examples of "Take your children to work Day" ever, a suspected prostitute in California was busted in a sting operation told officers she left her babies in a car while she walked the streets.

The Associated Press reports that Oakland police arrested the 25-year-old Stockton woman Wednesday afternoon after agreed to be paid in exchange for sex and got into the car of an undercover cop.

After police stopped the vehicle a few blocks away to make the arrest, the unidentified woman told police that her 1-year-old boy and girl were back in her car.

The officers checked the vehicle and sure enough, the babies were sleeping in the car seats.

The children have been turned over to child welfare officials and there are no details on what kind of charges the woman will face at this time.
