A 28-year veteran educator in the Grapevine-Colleyville district is one of five Texas teachers nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, according to an announcement released Monday by the Texas Education Association.
Barbara Kelley, who taught math at Cannon Elementary School last year, is one of 100 teachers nationwide who remain in the running for the award from the National Science Foundation. Kelley is working this year as an elementary math specialist for the district, Grapevine-Colleyville spokeswoman Megan Overman said.
After teachers were nominated, a state panel reviewed the applications and chose the finalists. The prize includes $10,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. to be recognized in a Capitol ceremony by the President of the United States.
