CBS 11 broke this story last night: An SMU task force formed after three students at the Dallas university died last year in incidents involving drugs and alcohol has recommended an on-campus pub or bar. The task force has also asked SMU President Gerald Turner to allow frats to serve alcohol at on-campus house parties, as long as they hire SMU police to check IDs and employ professional bartenders. Here's the university's formal statement.
Full disclosure: I'm an alum. I also recall the demise of the UTA pub in my early days as a Star-Telegram reporter. I'm not sure that allowing alcohol back on college campuses will solve binge-drinking problems among students, but it's worth a good debate. What do you think?
