Eye-Fi goes Nikon

Eye-Fi and Nikon have announced they will work together to deliver enhanced integration of its Eye-Fi cards with Nikon’s newly announced digital SLR camera, Nikon D90.

The wireless SD memory card, combined with the camera gives users an improved out-of- box experience and more control of wireless capabilities.

The camera will detect when an Eye-Fi card is inserted and manage its power settings to ensure that photos are upload for sharing and storing on a site of your choice.

A great feature added to the camera is an Eye-Fi menu, which will allow users to turn the wireless function on or off.

Kensington gets approved

Kensington Computer Products Group, has received Apple's "Works with iPhone" certification for its iPhone 3G battery packs and chargers

The Kensington line of battery packs and chargers are all portable and give the users the extra power they need to keep them running for extended periods of time.

Basically, what this means is that they won't overcharge, overpower, blowup or destroy your Apple product. Getting the certification means Apple tested it and if they like it, you should like it.

Canon announcements

Canon filled the in box today with all kinds of press releases on new cameras today. The highlights include
new PowerShot Digital Cameras, PIXMA Printers and SELPHY Compact Photo Printers.

In a nutshell from the press releases, the new 10.0-megapixels PowerShot E1 Digital Camera comes in three colors (White, Blue and Pink) with a 4X Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilization.

The new PowerShot A2000 IS Digital Camera comes with 10.0-megapixels, 6X Optical Zoom, Optical Image Stabilization and a 3.0-inch LCD screen.

The 10 megapixel PowerShot A1000 IS has a 4X Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilization and the 9.0-megapixel PowerShot SX110 IS Digital Camera has a 10X Optical Zoom lens with a 3.0-inch LCD screen and a 9.0-megapixel sensor.

New PIXMA Printers include the PIXMA MP980 and the PIXMA MP620 Photo All-In-One printers and are Wi-Fi enabled.

Canon 50D

Canon once again has taken top stage with the introduction of many new cameras.

The biggest announcement so far for them is the release of the 15.1-megapixel EOS 50D - advanced amateur digital SLR , which includes an expanded ISO range, improved noise reduction, and in-camera photo editing features.

It includes enhanced noise reduction, at higher ISO ranges which help users in dark rooms and dark night photography. Users will be able to shoot 6.3 frames per second

Along with the high megapixel quality, Canon's CMOS APS-C size image sensor has been improved to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 12800.

A big upgrade to this line of cameras (up from the 40D) is a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD screen, featuring four times the pixel count of the EOS 40D camera’s screen, for better clarity.

Pricing from Canon: The Canon EOS 50D is scheduled for October delivery and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated selling price of $1,399.00.

In addition, it will be offered in a kit version with Canon’s EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens at an estimated selling price of $1,599.00.

It's no secret I'm an Apple fan. I use their laptops, desktops, iPods and someday(!?) an iPhone. But with Seinfeld being my number one show of all time, it kills me to see Jerry being the new spokesman for Microsoft.

Some reports even have him making 10 million on the deal. Like he didn't make enough on the show itself, his endless tours, DVDs, syndication....yadi yadi yadi.

Hey PC users, my MacBook Pro runs great on the new OS X 10.5 Leopard and when a problem does arise, I go to an Apple store where I get FREE LOCAL HELP.

No phone calls to foreign countries, etc. How's that Vista working out? And was Keith Partridge not available?

Wedding but no photos

As if newlyweds don't have it difficult enough to survive in today's rocky economy but in a report on Fox23.com out of Oklahoma, newlyweds and now a business are going after a Tulsa wedding photographer, saying they are owed thousands of dollars for photos, which they never got.

One couple has been waiting well over a year for their photos. I got married seven years ago - I have my photos - but the album is another story.

USB toys with no wires

The World's First Wireless USB Universal Docking has been announced from Kensington.

It's a USB-IF certified Wireless USB universal docking station which will be available at www.dell.com later this month.

The device will bring together all the wireless capabilities between a computer and the USB devices and now users will not have to plug and unplug their extra USB devices due to limited amounts of USB ports in the computers.

The USB devices which can be used include, speakers, hard drives, mouse, keyboard and an external monitor - just to name a few. Now they all just have to be plugged into the new docking station, which works with
all Wireless USB-enabled notebook PCs.

Five USB ports, a DVI-I, a speaker port to be used for an external monitor and or speakers are built into the new unit. Kensington says "There is no complicated set up required and cable clutter is eliminated."

Kodak taking on the Flip

Kodak is taking on the popular Flip Video with the Zi6 Pocket Video Camera.

Features of the pocket sized device include the ability to capture HD video, a built-in2.4 inch screen and uploads directly to YouTube. The camera plugs directly into any USB port with the built-in USB jack.

The camera runs on AA batteries and sells for $179.95 at the Kodak site.

If it look familiar to you, think of the Flip Video camera released a few years ago. I've heard reports that they (Flip) have sold over 1 million of em'.

I have a Flip Video camera myself and look forward to Kodak sending me a review unit on this new one.

Movies on the way

From today's Star-Telegram: Netflix, the online video-rental service, resumed normal shipments Friday after its distribution centers were crippled by three days of severe technical problems, a spokesman said.

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, Calif., also offered a 15 percent credit to customers whose discs were delayed by the outage, the cause of which the company is not disclosing.

More on the Apple fire

MacWorld is reporting that the fire earlier this week at Apple’s Cupertino campus did about $2 million in damage according to local fire departments.

The story also stated that the fire started accidentally, - attributing the cause to construction work being done on the building, where workers were welding on the buidling’s roof.

My weekly gadget column in the Star-Telegram this week covers Serif software, which is very affordable but does a whole lot.

Anyone wanting an all-in-one solution for professional quality Web design without paying a high price should give Serif’s WebPlus X2 a try with a price of $79.99 - a whole lot cheaper then many of the others.

Serif has a big line of software designed for users who don't want to spend the big bucks, but it's PC only. Hopefully they will get with the Mac program sometime soon.

Other things I write about are new bags from Lowepro, new flash drives from Kingston and Newertech has added the miniStack v2.5 to its lineup of the award-winning NewerTech miniStack line.

iPhone 2.0 problems go on

I still don't have an iPhone, but I"m getting close. I have several iPods and even an iPod touch.

Apple's commercials on the new iPhone tout it as twice as fast as the older version (old as in a year old) but the problems I read about, say there are about twice as many problems.

Rob Griffith's is a well respected MacWorld writer and here is his take on some of the problems and what to do if you have a locked up iPhone.

Apple yawns at Zune

Interesting tidbit of information in the August issue of MacWorld magazine. Microsoft's media player, called the Zune, announced they have sold 2 million of its players since its launch in November 2006. This gave them 4 percent of the market for MP3 players.

Apple sold 10.6 million iPods in the first quarter alone ending March 31, 2008.

You do the math, maybe that money Microsoft is throwing at the Zune should go to making Vista working something close to Apple's OS?

Didn't Dell Computers give it a try in the game to take on the iPod a few years ago? How's that working out?

Another TSA screen free bag

Just last week I had a story in the Star-Telegram about a new laptop bag from Targus which holds a laptop in it for traveling, but if using it, TSA won't make you take the laptop out of it (we like the story so much - we ran it twice).

Add the Incipio Announces TSA “Checkpoint Friendly” Laptop Carrying Cases to the list of another company making a similar bag.

The company says The QuickCheck cases feature a slim form factor not seen in other notebook cases, designed to offer excellent everyday protection and style but also provide optimal function and protection throughout the TSA security checkpoint process while the user’s laptop remains safe in its case.

They added that TSA has announced they will now be allowing laptops to go through screening while remaining in a “Checkpoint Friendly” case in efforts to improve the overall passenger security experience.

Ha! Checkpoint Friendly!!! I'll believe it when I see it.

The last tech thing I heard to change with TSA was you couldn't carry on batteries while in a device. When I got to a checkpoint myself and asked about it, the agent there told me he hadn't heard about it so I shouldn't worry about removing my batteries. So either I heard wrong, or he heard nothing.

Good for the Apple

Those looking for the iPhone will not have to search for an Apple store starting next month. This should be welcome relief, especially since they are sure to be hot sellers this coming holiday season.

Apple stores are not nearly as common as Best Buy stores (our Fort Worth Apple store opens August 23!) but we seem to have a Best Buy around as common as CVS and Walgreen's.

A Minneapolis Star Tribune report today in the Star-Telegram said the phones will be available at all of Best Buys 965 U.S. stores on Sept. 7.

I recently went with a co-worker to an Apple store for her to get an iPhone and there were no lines and took less then five minutes to sign her up and get the phone activated.

The news should be good to bring shoppers into Best Buy since their sales have slacked recently according to the report. Lets just hope no more fires (see below) at Apple low down the production.

Baked apple

It was both good and bad for Apple on the news front today.

First the bad news. A report on Yahoo news said a fire damaged the Apple research facility on Tuesday around 10 p.m. where more then 60 firefighters had to battle the fire and black smoke.

The fire was contained to the second floor and was out in about three hours. Authorities felt the fire started under an air conditioning unit in the building where at least 100 Apple employees work.

Maybe a little sale in the works for some fire damaged goodies?

Today, Logitech has announced the V550 Nano cordless laser mouse for notebooks available for $59.99 later this month at www.logitech.com .

Features include an innovative Clip-and-Go dock, so users can clip the mouse to the notebook directly without worrying about having to carry it.

The receiver works in any USB 2.0 port and is so small it can stay in the port without needing to be removed, regardless if the mouse is being used. Users will get 18-months of battery life - more power than ever before. It will also automatically turn off when docked to your notebook.

FinePix S2000HD 10 megapixel camera is for for advanced amateur photographers. It features a 15x wide-angle optical zoom (27.6mm-414mm equivalent) along with a 2.7” wide-view LCD. This is the first Fujifilm digital camera with HD compatibility, since it can capture still pictures in a true widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio.

Movies captured by the S2000HD can be converted in-camera into a HDTV signal output.

The FinePix S2000HD will be available in September with an MSRP of $299.95.

The FinePix F60fd is part of Fuji's F-Series lineup, features a 12-megapixel sensor, and a 3.0” LCD,

Other features include dual image stabilization, face detection technology with automatic red-eye removal.

The third one, the 10-megapixel FinePix J150w is part of the affordable J-series digital camera line. It's available in matte black or stylish brushed silver. The camera is housed in a compact metal chassis measuring just 22.6 mm thick, making it truly pocket sized.

Included is a 3.0” LCD and 5x wide-angle optical Fujinon zoom lens (28mm-140mm equivalent on 35mm camera), face detection and automatic red eye removal.

Expect is out also in September with an MSRP of $199.95.

Kingston Technology Company, Inc., is now shipping a 32GB Elite Pro SDHC Flash memory cards (yes, I said 32G) for use with today’s digital video camcorders and other high-resolution imaging devices.

The 32GB card is the largest capacity in Kingston’s Elite Pro line of SDHC cards. Also in that line are capacities of 4, 8 and 16GB capacities.

Canon U.S.A., today, announced two new PIXMA Photo All-In-One printers and three new CanoScan scanners.

The PIXMA MP480 all-in-one printer has a 1.8-inch TFT color LCD display and a control panel.
Included is Auto Photo Fix and Auto Scan Mode, to help reduce the steps necessary to print a photo with maximum quality.

The estimated selling price for the PIXMA MP480 Photo All-In-One is $99.99. A $49.99 optional Bluetooth wireless connection for sending images to the printer is also available.

The PIXMA MP190 printer is aimed at the more economically minded consumer, with a maximum of 4800 x 1200 dpi color resolution.

Canons press release stated that text printing speeds are up to 19 ppm for black and up to 15 ppm for color, providing users with high speed to go along with high quality. The printer also delivers 4 x 6 inch border less photo quality prints in approximately 70-seconds.

The estimated selling price for the Canon MP190 Photo All-In-One is $69.99.

The news scanners include the Canon CANOSCAN 5600F color image scanner,. which provides users with the ability to scan up to six frames of a 35mm filmstrip or four 35mm slides at a maximum optical resolution of 4800 x 9600 dots-per-inch.

The estimated selling price for the CanoScan 5600F Color Image Scanner is $149.99.3

Canon CANOSCAN LiDE200 and LiDE100 color image scanners are for home or the office.

Canon's realease has the The CanoScan LiDE200 with a maximum optical resolution of 4800 x 4800 dpi while the CanoScan LiDE100 has a maximum optical resolution of 2400 x 4800 dpi.

The estimated selling price of the CanoScan LiDE200 Color Image Scanner is $89.99 and $59.99 for the CanoScan LiDE100 Color Image Scanner.
