D.R. Horton among the greenest of the big builders

Dr_horton_home Fort Worth-based D.R. Horton has been in the news quite a bit lately, mainly because the lousy housing market is really hurting America's largest homebuilder. But a new report by Calvert, an investment management firm, offers the company some good news: D.R. Horton is one of the greenest homebuilders, at least among the nation's 13 largest builders.

The study, done in conjunction with the Boston College Institute for Responsible Investment, ranked Horton No. 2, tied for the spot with Bloomfield Hills, MI.-based Pulte. Dallas-based Centex ranked No. 4 in the study, titled "Greener Pastures for America’s Homebuilders? A Survey of Sustainable Practices by the Homebuilding Industry."

The top green homebuilder among the 13 bigs:  K.B. Home, of Los Angeles, which the report notes, is “clearly leading the homebuilding industry in terms of environmental sustainability.”
