Around the state Wednesday

Here's an interesting question
"Why did they bring the case to the grand jury if they didn't want the grand jury to do its job?" state District Judge Jim Wallace asked. He was talking about the Harris County District Attorney's Office, which brought the arson and evidence-tampering accusations against Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina and his wife to the grand jury, then moved to dismiss the indictment handed up by the grand jury, then learned that its own paperwork error had nullified the jury's work even before it happened. Brian Rogers and Dale Lezon of the Houston Chronicle have the whole story. The story also answers a question we had yesterday. Medina's lawyer, Terry Yates, wanted two jurors who criticized the DA's office publicly to be found in contempt of court. Judge Wallace said Yates' request is now moot, since there was no grand jury.

Chuck Rosenthal's other problem
There's a hearing next week to discuss Harris County DA Chuck Rosenthal's deleted e-mails. Peggy O'Hare of the Chronicle has the report.

Not quite a crackdown
The city of Georgetown decided not to require its contractors to sign an affidavit declaring that they had no illegal immigrants on their payroll, Bob Banta of the Austin American-Statesman reports.

Calling King Solomon
City commissioners in Alice have urged the mayor, Grace Saenz-Lopez, to resign after reports that she stole a neighbor's dog. She's facing two felony counts of tampering with physical evidence related to the dog, a Shih Tzu named Puddles and then renamed Panchito. And there's a hearing in a custody battle over the dog scheduled for Feb. 4. Almost worth driving to South Texas for.
