Your Optometric Dollars At Work?
Campaign finance reports were due yesterday and one of the most interesting local ones to come out is from Tom Annunziato. The optometrist is challenging Fort Worth state rep. Charlie Geren in the Republican primary.
Annunziato reported raising $178,262 between Sept. 17 and Dec. 31. The vast majority of that money is from optometrists, including $77,955 from the Texas Optometric PAC.
So why do optometrists so badly want one of their own in the state House?
According to an editorial on the Texas Optometric Association's Web site, "Optometry is a 'legislated profession' -- which basically means that our ability to deliver care to our patients is determined by the legislature."
Visit the Texas Ethic Commission to look up campaign finance reports for yourself.

I looked up the ethics report and it looks like the only money that Geren's opponent has raised is from his trade group, almost totally from outside of the district. I wonder if he will promise not to serve on public health committee so that the only issue he would push is anti-physician, pro-optometry issues. I also wonder if Craddick offered him that spot for his vote.
