Zedler Knocks Jackson's GOP Roots
The candidate forum between State Rep. Bill Zedler of Arlington and Fort Worth police officer Lee Jackson last night was short. Both gave opening statements. None of the 40 or so people at the Southeast Republican Club meeting in Mansfield had a question for either candidate. Zedler gave a quick closing statement and sat down.
But the battle lines between the two men were clear.
Zedler hammered on Jackson's Republican credentials, noting that he's voted in
Democratic primaries. And the clincher: "In 2004, he was a John Kerry delegate," Zedler said, drawing out a few of grunts of disappointment from the crowd.
Jackson responded by saying he was "an independent thinker" and criticized Zedler's support for school vouchers and a pass rate for his bills that was about "10 percent."
Zedler then ended the forum by noting that he often hears from people complaining that Republicans should get more done in Austin since they're the ones in power.
"Republicans are in control," Zedler said. "Conservatives are not."
