Collin County's democratic convention was an all-nighter

The Collin County Democratic Party began their democratic convention at 10 a.m. yesterday.

It ended at 7:15 a.m. this morning.

The 21-hour event went off pretty well, said party vice chair D. Shawn Stevens, who was still speaking coherently and in full sentences while on the phone with me after pulling the equivalent of a raging kegger minus the booze.

Stevens said the convention finished sign-ins by around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The precincts finished electing their delegates to the state convention by 11:30 p.m.

So what kept the party going past midnight? The nominatons committee, which had to elect the at-large delegates. (Those delegates needed to reflect the demographics of the primary voters in the area, so if, say, too many male or white delegates were nominated on the precinct level, the at-large delegates needed to balance that out.)

Most everyone left after their precinct had finished its work, Stevens said. Only about 50 people made it through the whole event.

So what was the final result? From senate district 30 8, Obama got 108 delegates and Clinton got 55 delegates. From senate district 8 30, Obama squeaked out another win, with nine delegates to Clinton's seven delegates.

Collin County Democrats held their convention a day later because they couldn't find a location big enough to handle the 3,300 people expected.

Stevens said he was not worried about the results of the convention being challenged because it was held on the wrong day.

"The state party chair Boyd Richie came to our event," Stevens said. "I don't think he would show up at an event that he thought was illegitimate."
