Mike Smith, R.I.P.

Smith, the lead singer of the great Dave Clark Five, died Thursday at age 64 after years of health problems. As the obituary points out, the DC5 is about to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I tend to like their more rock 'n' roll stuff than the song I'm featuring here, but this is one of their most charming and enduring hits.

Another guy goes home

Luke and Robbie are in trouble. Other guys are safe. Well, the remaining guys. I think it's gonna be Robbie.

Wow, typed that just before Ryan said it.

Got stuff to do. Outta here for the night. I leave you with this, which the "Idol Gives Back" logo made me want to hear.

Just as I was about to say this doesn't feel that padded

Ryan tells us about the Beatles songs being released for Idol, which most of us have known about for two days already. Along come a bunch of other plugs for upcoming editions, including this year's "Idol Gives Back."

With a looonng look back at last year's "Idol Gives Back" ...

Another woman goes home

Carly's safe. Ramiele's safe. Syesha's safe. Between Kady and Alaina, I'm betting Kady goes because of her unmagical "Magic Man." But she's safe!

Alaina, on the other hand, gets the voters couldn't get hopefully devoted to her Olivia Newton-John.

Both women who went home tonight got a raw deal.

"The ladies put on a great show last night"?

What show was Ryan watching? To me, the women were mediocre at best. Syesha sounded pretty good during that clip, though. I'm thinking either Kady or Amanda goes home on this round.

Wow. Alexandrea, who was really good last week, goes home, while Amanda Overmeyer, who was TERRIBLE this week, gets to stick around. I like Amanda, but I hope she gets some control over her performances, 'cause she flattened Kansas' "Carry On My Wayward Son" last night.

This should make other contestants nervous

During last night's show and again during tonight's, I've gone looking for something on YouTube and found David Archuleta's "Imagine" among the "videos being watched right now." This kid really is far ahead of the pack.

A guy goes home

Once again, not a big fan of the recaps, which lately largely consist of encores of mediocre performances. Although it does serve to remind me that I didn't think anyone was really HORRIBLE, but there were only two or three standouts.

Ryan's back in form, dragging out the eliminations, really torturing Rockwall's Jason Castro.

Aaaand Grand Prairie's Jason Yeager's long train stops runnin', while Daniel Noriega, whom I enjoy hearing sass back to the judges but don't enjoy hearing sing, sticks around.

Michael Johns, connected to Fort Worth bu marriage, also sticks around.

Don't forget the earaches

Back live-blogging American Idol, and here we go with another incredibly padded results show.

31 million votes -- that's, what, 1 per viewer? Or one per household?

Indeed, what IS the purpose of the themes? Do you think any of these contestants is going to go out and do an album of '70s covers?

Ryan's Mom notices that Simon is doing a "half-moose" with his right hand. The actual explanation is that he's trying to keep his horn from coming off and ... oh, no, group sing. Time top hit mute.

Buddy Miles, R.I.P.

OK, sorry for putting up three bummer posts in a row, but this one is the most important, because the drummer -- who played with an impressive number of people, most notably Jimi Hendrix -- lived for a time in Fort Worth, and played many gigs here and in Dallas, including a benefit for victims of the spring 2000 tornado. Miles died Tuesday in Austin at age 60. I wish I could find a better clip than this bit from the always-surreal Playboy After Dark, but this is the best representation of Miles' biggest solo hit, Them Changes. -- Robert Philpot
