Born in 1935, Terry Riley
launched what is now known as the American Minimalist music movement in 1964
with this revolutionary classic, a joyous communal experience for performers and
audiences alike. Like Puryear's sculptures, Riley's work is deceptively simple,
growing out of a deep engagement with the fundamental materials of his craft.
Where Puryear's skill as a
woodworker, working closely with the organic identity of his materials, leads to
a larger realm of space and concept, Riley's intensely tactile exploration of
tiny musical ideas blossoms into a large shared space of musical
invention.
Any number of players perform a series of fifty-three musical
fragments—repeating, looping, pausing, and changing registers at will to create
a shifting, hypnotic musical tapestry. The players listen to each other and find
inspiration in their own imaginations and the behaviors of the musicians around
them. The resulting work is a celebration of the magical life of simple sounds:
always new and different, but always "In C."
