$9.99 to Mexico from Austin

VivaaerobusWant a really, really cheap flight to Mexico? Are you willing to drive to Austin to catch the plane?

If so, check out the new service from Viva Aerobus, a no-frills, low-fare Mexican carrier that launches service between Austin and Monterrey and Cancun starting May 1. Some introductory fares will be priced as low as $9.99, which would mean a total of $55 to $65 with fees and taxes.

Don't expect much in the way of service. The airline doesn't use jet bridges, for example, or sophisticated baggage handling equipment. If it seems more like bus service than an airline, it may be because the carrier is co-owned by Mexican bus company IAMSA. The other owner is the Ryan family, founders of European ultra-low-fare carrier Ryanair.

You can book tickets on Viva here.
