Breakdown of AA fee hikes
Here's a breakdown of the new and increased fees American Airlines is going to be implementing:
- Checked bag fee
From free to $15 each way for the first checked bag on domestic flights. Travelers with elite status in the airline’s frequent flier program are exempt. - Ticket change fees
Domestic - from $100 to $150
International - from $100-200 to $150-300
Frequent flier awards - from $100 to $150 - Ticketing Fees
Booking by phone or through the frequent flier program - from $15 to $20
Using a travel agent, including online agencies like Travelocity – from $15 to $20
Buying a ticket at the airport – from $20 to $30 - Pet Fees
Cabin (Domestic, Mexico, Canada, Caribbean) – from $80 to $100 each way
Checked (Domestic, Mexico, Canada, Caribbean, Central and South America) – from $100 to $150 each way - Other Fees
Unaccompanied Minor - from $75 to $100 each way
Oversized Bag – from $100 to $150 each way
Reinstating frequent flier miles for unused flights – from $100 to $150
The checked bag fee takes effect for tickets purchased on or after June 15. Everything else is effective today.
So ... if you're an unaccompanied minor on a domestic trip, traveling with two pets (one in the cabin and one checked), who books a ticket by phone, changes the ticket once and has one oversized bag, you're seeing a total increase of $375 round-trip.
Few of us, obviously, will be hit by all these fees. But most travelers will likely be impacted by at least one or two, particularly leisure passengers.
