So long, Eos, we hardly knew ya

Eos_airlineEos, the startup carrier that offered all-business-class service between JFK Airport in New York and Stansted Airport in London, has called it quits. It's the fourth airline to shut down this year, following Aloha, Skybus and ATA.

Fuel was a huge factor, of course, but Eos also found itself in a battle with American Airlines, which began its own service between the two airports to keep those lucrative international business travelers from defecting.

EOS eyeing domestic service?

All-business-class carrier Eos, which flies between JFK Airport in New York and London Stansted, may be considering launching domestic service, according to a report in Aviation Daily. According to the industry newsletter, Eos has asked the Department of Transportation for permission to operate scheduled domestic service, which could "strengthen its international service" and "allow Eos to bring its superior and unique service to travelers seeking alternative flight options."

Eos rival MaxJet, which had a similar business model, recent shut down, thanks to oil prices and competition from American Airlines. AA began its own flights from New York to Stansted to try to keep passengers from defecting to the all-business-class carriers. It remains to be seen how badly Eos has been affected by American's pushback, but a move to begin domestic service could be an attempt to bring in more revenue and funnel more passengers onto its transatlantic flights through connections at JFK.

EOS expands

EOS, the all-business-class airline that's currently flying between New York's JFK Airport and Stansted Airport in London said this morning that it will begin flying from JFK to Paris next fall, and between Newark Airport in New Jersey and Stansted in the spring.

American has been keeping a close eye on EOS, and recently began its own service from JFK to Stansted. EOS squarely targets those transatlantic business travelers that are so important to AA's business model these days. So expect some competitive responses from American and other airlines when the EOS flight begins.
