April 17 storm damages exceed $200 million
The powerful April 17 storms that pounded Parker County with softball-sized hail caused insurance damages exceeding $200 million, according to the Insurance Council of Texas.
An estimated 33,000 homeowner claims and 21,000 automobile claims have been submitted to insurance companies. The hail storms were particularly rough on auto dealers in the Weatherford area. Jerry's Chevrolet in Hudson Oaks suffered damages to 2,000 new and used vehicles.
A second round of storms on April 23 generated tornadoes, powerful winds and more hail over a 300-mile swatch from Lamesa in West Texas to Dallas. The hardest hit area was Crowley where numerous homes were heavily damaged.
Mark Hanna, a spokesperson for the council, said four severe thunderstorms have pounded Texas so far this season.
“Roofers and body shops are very busy right now,” Hanna said. “We urge all policyholders to work with local, reputable businesses when making repairs.” Hanna said he spoke with a Fort Worth roofer who said he wore a size 11 shoe. The man was able to place his foot inside the damage from one hail stone that struck a roof in Parker County.
