A volcanic strike of lightning

R4184494436Lightning bolts appear above and around the Chaiten volcano as seen from Chana, about 19 miles north of the volcano, as it began its first eruption in thousands of years, in southern Chile on May 2. Cases of electrical storms breaking out directly above erupting volcanos are well documented, although scientists differ on what causes them. Photo by Carlos Gutierrez/REUTERS

Alvarado Church Destruction

Last week's storms devastated the Cowboy Way Church in Alvarado, according to Pastor Dan Haby. The church was a 6,000 square-foot, blue-and-white striped tent with permanent front doors, stadium seating and a sound system. For now, church meetings are being held outdoors. Haby sent the following pictures of the remains.

Where the worst wind was; 7th tornado?

Windy_3 Not surprisingly, especially if you saw the damage, the folks at the NWS have identified the HEB area as the point where straight-line winds were the worst, somewhere in the 75 to 80 mph range. Also, note, however, the smaller circle in NE Johnson County where some circulation occurred. It's possible the list of tornadoes from Thursday's storms may still need to get a little longer.
